  Unfussy and exceptionally friendly pub with simply furnished bars, popular food, fair choice of drinks, and quirky bedrooms
Description For many people, this is just how pubs should be. Friendly, chatty locals in their wellies (with maybe a dog or two) sitting around a roaring log fire, a warmly welcoming and hospitable landlord and flower posies on the tables. The enjoyably unspoilt bar has a lot of homely character: rocking chairs, cushioned wall benches built into the wall's black-painted wooden dado, stripped tables and other simple country furnishings and well kept Adnams Broadside, Cotleigh Tawny, and Sharps Doom Bar or Teignworthy Reel Ale tapped from the cask, and quite a few wines by the glass. It does get pretty cramped at peak times; darts. There’s also a dining room. Through a small coach arch is a little back garden with some picnic-sets. The bedrooms are quirky and in some cases very far from smart, so their appeal is very much to people who enjoy taking the rough with the smooth.

Good, honest, fairly priced bar food - using the landlord's own rare-breed beef - includes sandwiches, ploughman’s, soup, chicken liver pâté, sausage or ham with eggs, liver and bacon, leek and mushroom bake, steak and kidney or fish pie, various curries and casseroles, double lamb chop with rosemary and garlic gravy and puddings. Starters/Snacks: £4.00 to £7.00. Main Courses: £6.50 to £13.50. Puddings: £3.50 to £4.50
